so, other than learning a whole heckin of chemistry and physics in college, what makes this job hard. junior cheme here, i can’t speak with much experience, but i can say without a doubt the sheer workload is a big part of it. also inherently chemes have to learn a lot of hard sciences, which can be difficult but not impossible if you work hard and seek help. i hated it, but i feel like it helped prepare me (somewhat) for a job that lasts longer than 9 to 5 most days and has hours that change sometimes because plants don’t quit going when you go home. chemes are the crossway of physics, chemistry, and math. you have to master all three in order to do this well.

you have to spend time on practice problems. these problems are complicated, long, and come at you in ways you don’t expect. his response, which was immediate and instinctual, was that “they didn’t want to put in the work. just my experience as a senior graduating in may. basically you need the be great at both which few people can do or want to put on the work to be able to do. of the students that graduated from my school in 2015, 50% are working related fields, 20% in grad programs and most of the rest are working in unrelated fields in jobs they obtained cuz their credentials. i wouldn’t call that horrible the work is difficult (in comparison to most jobs), there is a lot of it and it is considered boring by most.
